First two weeks on Zanzibar

Hi guys,

we are here on Zanzibar now for more than two weeks and it feels like forever (which is great). We are sure you would like to know more about how we live our lives now.

At the moment we still live in one of the Palmgrove Bungalows at Evergreen Bungalows – room number 3. It was supposed to be ready before our arrival but of course it was ready one week later 🙂

We are impressed how nice the room looks after renovation

Overall renovations started smoothly but in my opinion it is all too pole pole (slowly slowly). Our plan was to finish the rooms at one side of the beach and then move on with the other side…..the problem is that the fundis (workers) have no sense of project management which was leading to the circumstance of having all the toilets in all the rooms uninstalled…Our plan of renting out a few rooms to make some income changed dramatically 😉

But hakuna matata (no problem) we will survive and just go on with the renovation. At the moment 4 more rooms are nearly finished – only the new mattresses are missing. Mustafa is in town right now to pick them up.

A few days ago we already had walk in guests who stayed 2 nights with us.  We were fixing our king size beach bungalow for them so that they felt comfy.
it was successful since they wrote such a heartwarming comment in our guest book. These are the small moments when you realize that all the hard work is worth it.

What else are we doing apart of renovating, painting and teaching our staff?
I usually wake up with the first sun rays, do some exercises and go or a swim before I chill in one of our hammocks for 15 minutes. After that new daily routine I try to wake Mustafa up and start to work 😉 .

And then we go shopping…this is a completely new experience. Whereas we Europeans are used to go in one shop and buy things as curtains, mattresses, lamps or other furniture here on Zanzibar the rules are different. If you need curtains or pillow cases for example you buy material, you take the measurement and then you give it to a tailor who is tailoring the items. We also bought beds for our new dormitory which is nearly finished. But of course we did not go to a shop and just buy them. We went to a small factory and told the guys what we need so that they can start the production.  The people take all the time they need, no stress anywhere which is great….which also means an ordinary shopping day is going shopping for 8 to 10 hours 😉
